If you haven’t heard about the new AMP Program Proposal then read this!

If you live in Ontario Canada you are about to have your rights taken away under a new proposed law AMP (Administrative Monetary Penalty) by the Liberal Government. You are about to be found guilty for traffic offences under the new system that will take away your rights to be heard in front of an impartial person such as a Judge. This system has been quietly introduced by the Provincial Government and is set to launch very quickly. It has already been give Royal Assent which means it can go through without being contested by the public. Consultation was introduced early on March and feedback opportunities were closed at the end of April. Most people I know didn’t even know about it until May and from what I understand it was sold as a solution for the insurance industry to help protect against claims. What it really does is take away the rights of every driver. I am no lawyer but basically this is how it will work. canadian money

If you have a traffic infraction you will be cited with a ticket. If you want to fight that ticket you will have to go online where your case will be heard by an Administrative Officer. The Administrative Officer will be municipal employees with their job being to collect money for the municipality. What do you think will happen in their performance appraisals if they are giving too many reductions or not collecting enough money? That is not impartial for anyone. The most that they can do is to reduce the amount of the ticket that was issued by the officer. They will not have the power to remove the guilt or challenge the officer’s evidence. If officers know that their evidence won’t be challenged will they still take the care required to get proper evidence before issuing a citation? Similar systems are already in place in cities like Brampton and Mississauga for things like parking tickets and municipal citations.

So what can you do? Right now the two month consultation period has been closed as of April 28, 2015. There are many petitions being formed to show public opposition to this new proposal. The proposal is now being reviewed and can go into law without being challenged. Everyone is urged to sign a petition in hopes of stopping the law from reaching proclamation.  You can read more about the law and how it will affect you at http://www.moepa.ca. Your rights are being taken away without your knowledge, don’t let that happen.

Organization is the key to success on the road!

Most people would argue that they’re organized and others would say they don’t know what being organized is? At this time of year being organized really comes into light. When you realize that you have to get all kinds of information to bookkeepers and accountants by a certain date you realize the importance. If you found that this year you were not ready for tax season then you want to make sure that doesn’t happen next year. Organization may be the key, but how do you do it?

Some people thrive on chaos, just look at the front dash on many driver’s trucks Slip Seat Illustrationand you will see what I mean. One of the ways I found to keep things organized is either the briefcase method or by buying one of those organizers that hang over the back of the passenger seat. Get all the things you need to do paperwork and keep organized. Little things like staplers, folders, and other office supplies can help you get paperwork done while on the road.

One of the real secrets to keeping organized is to schedule time each week to complete those duties. It also helps to not to let paperwork duties go pass the week that they happen. Try having an envelope for your paperwork that you just put it into when you get it a receipt and then categorize it at a certain time each week. Or you can use the batch method. Put all your receipts in a small envelope and when that envelope gets too full then you will have to empty it at some point. I do this with my filing in my office. I have tray that is on the bottom of a stack of other trays so I can only fill it so much as I hate filing. When I can’t fit anymore into that tray then I have to file. Organization is a lot about mind games for some people. We all put off duties we don’t like and for some that is paperwork. Remember it is just a state of mind. Your other option is to delegate those duties but that may cost you. Look for ways to keep organized, you have more time than you think.

What do you look for in your accountant?

If you are in business, thinking about being in business, or have a complex tax situation then you will definitely need an accountant to get you through it successfully. Many avoid finding an accountant thinking their neighbour down the street can do it for them, but if they are not a trained accountant they can be causing more problems than not.canadian money

So the first thing we are going to look at is the accountant certified? You want this should you ever have to deal with Revenue Canada or go through an audit you will want your accountant to deal with them on your behalf, much like a lawyer. It is suggested to make sure they have CGA, CA, or CPA designation. Although your accountant doesn’t have to live in your town you will find it easier to use someone fairly local so that you can visit and exchange information throughout the year. Those are the main things to look for in an accountant.

I have my own list that is important to me and you may have a similar list for yourself. This list was just what I decided was important to me over time in my business. I wanted someone young so that they would be in business for a while and someone that will be in business for a long time. The other important item for me was the fact that the accountant of choice used the same software that I used so that reports and other accounting duties can be done seamlessly and online. The third piece was I wanted someone that had their own business. This way I knew they would be a little hungry and and willing to give good customer service. I found those things in my accountant here in Burlington Ontario and I would encourage you to create your own list. Whatever you put on your list, remember the important fact is that you do get someone qualified to do your taxes. I would encourage that even if you are not in business. A good accountant will save you more money than they charge you so you will win on the long run. So what will you look for in your accountant?
