Use These Reporting Techniques to Give Focus to Your Life

Barbados sunset

Life has a way of throwing things at us that seem to be a series of tests constantly challenging us to see what we are made of; how you handle those tests will determine your success. Each person will handle those tests in their own way based on prior experiences. Often it is not until we reach a point in life that we look back and see our true purpose and what strengths we bring to the table.

This happened recently to me as I was finishing up my latest book “You’re Not Done Yet!” As I wrote out the chapters I realized that my life is much like a newspaper article. Using the questions that a reporter would use to develop a story can also be used to find focus in our lives as entrepreneurs. Over time I have realized why I have developed the way that I have and the reason I feel strongly about certain things.

If you haven’t heard of the questions used by reporters when they are creating articles for news stories it is really quite basic. Although I am not a journalist by nature I have found using those same questions can be very effective at finding focus for my business. The questions every reporter uses is, “Why, What, When, Who, Where, and How?” Why did that event happen? What happened? When did it happen? Who was involved? Where did it happen? How did it happen? With that basic information a story can be put together and the important facts would be covered. What if you used those same facts to find the focus in your life?

Why do you think the way you do? What do you feel strongly about? When in your life did you begin to struggle or excel in certain areas? Who are you now as opposed to who you were as a kid? Where are you in life? How did you get there? If you were to answer those questions honestly you will start to see patterns from your life that can be used to give it focus. It can help you focus on the future or even help you realize issues from the past.

Oddspot-Episode 7-Inspiring Youth

Over my life I have done many things from driving semi trucks across North America to starting an art business and creating podcasts. When people ask what I do for a living I often don’t know what to tell them and usually just tell them I am a creative entrepreneur. It may look like I am throwing mud at a wall and hoping something sticks when truly all of those different projects are doing the same thing for different audiences.

All of my businesses basically help others have successful businesses and careers by showing people that have gone before them. One audience is the transportation community, one audience is creative entrepreneurs, one audience is young people, and another audience is kids. Different platforms and different topics all doing the same thing, helping people have better lives.

What is your purpose for your life? What have you found to be the common denominator in what you do? It can be a struggle to find that focus, that one thing, but it can also be very rewarding when you do. It can change your life and the lives of those around you, take a moment to think about it.

Tips to Improving Your Live Video Meetings

Improve Live Videos

With the Covid-19 crisis everyone has shifted their business online as much as possible. Television to radio to conference calls are all being done through platforms like Zoom and Skype. I think stocks in Zoom must have gone through the roof, I have never heard their name mentioned so much. Talk about free advertising. I have been using Zoom for years to conduct interviews for my podcasts and meetings with clients long distances away. For those of you that may not be familiar with it, it is a video chat software like Skype or FaceTime but with a few more bells and whistles. The platform isn’t the important part, it’s how you use it that is important.

Since television shows are using video chat for their programming I have seen some horrific video and I think most people will cringe if they saw how bad they looked on screen. I thought I would offer you tips to help you improve your live videos since you may begin using them for your business if you haven’t already. I have been conducting online art lessons for kids during the crisis using Zoom and it works really well. Whatever you’re using take these tips in to consideration and it will drastically improve your video call.

Use Times of Trouble to Refocus Your Business

lake picture

March 2020 has been an interesting month to say the least. I have never would have thought that the World would shutdown the way it has and this certainly will go down in history with many of the big events of life. As much as many of us are hurt from a business standpoint I try to remind myself that no one is shooting at us or bombing us from above. We aren’t being tortured by some rebel force or being locked in a dungeon while our family’s are torn from us.

Times like this force us to look at our business and life and reevaluate it for the future. We all can do better and spend less. That rainy day fund that your investment broker has been telling you about has now become a reality as to why we should have saved more. Life is at a low moment right now.

On the positive side this is a good time to revisit your business or career and start making some adjustments. Is your business diversified? I have been criticized over many years for doing too many things. Focus on one thing everyone told me. In this crisis I am glad that I diversified by doing podcasts and not just be a caricature artist. I have business that is currently bringing in some income and gives me work to complete at home. My art business is event based so that came to halt fairly quickly.

I have spent this time revising our websites, updating profiles for our services and completing my book which started late last year. I have been scheduling podcast interviews with those guests that are hard to track down other times of the year so business is still busy. What are you doing during this time? Are you sitting around watching Netflix or are you using this time to review your business plan, learn a new skill, or refocus your services?

When I have been at the lowest times in my life is when I usually have had the most growth. A divorce can cause you to restart your life, a job loss can offer a new business opportunity, and a medical crisis can cause you to rethink your health. I hope this time has got you thinking about things at least hopefully offering a better future.

I hope you survive these trying times and come out stronger in the end. I hope you finish that project that you were always hoping to finish. I hope you reconnect with those people we are all too busy to reach out to at other times of the year. I hope you refocus and come out on top at the end of the crisis. Don’t waste this time, embrace it. I wish you well.
