As you know the trucking industry is a huge part of my life. I have been a part of the industry since I was seventeen years old. Over the years especially throughout the 80s and early 90s women in the trucking industry were few and far between. It just wasn’t a popular profession for women and the few that were in the industry back in the day usually had entered the industry through a male counterpart such as a husband or parent.
Today things are much different. Women are finding it a viable job choice and once past the intimidation of the large trucks women find it to be a fun job. What we are finding in the industry is that women make amazing drivers, not something you may have heard over the years. They are attentive and they want to learn. They take safety seriously and take great attention to their equipment.
On Inspiring Youth TV each year I usually feature the trucking industry because I believe their are amazing opportunities for young people both men and young women. In my own career I have gone from helper on a moving truck to driver, owner operator, and now media entrepreneur. All due to being a driver in the trucking industry that I didn’t really know about when I started back in the late 70s.
On Season 8 of Inspiring Youth TV we again feature the trucking industry and the women in it and not necessarily from a driving standpoint. Administration, operations, dispatch, and teaching are all viable career paths within the industry that don’t require a license. I talk a little bit about it in the video below. If you are interested in a career in the trucking industry talk to a training school or career organization to see what opportunities are available. The options may surprise you.
