When you start in business often you are trying to figure out how you can get business and keep in front of the competition. You try every trick in the book and work on getting your name out there as much as possible. Then like me you get to a point where you look back in your business and realize that doing a good job with the right equipment is the real secret to winning over the customers. You’re providing value for your customer.
To provide that value to clients you need to have the resources to do so and many times those resources have to be purchased before a client is paying you. I have found in my business that even small investments can be a huge gain in getting clients. In the caricature business many artists will complete the drawing and roll it up and hand it to the customer. Doing the transaction that way it may save you money as all you need are rubber bands. The problem is that the paper is subject to the elements, there is nowhere to offer a business card, and no one else can see the drawing. Whenever I buy something I like to get it put in a bag, it completes the purchase. When I started my caricature business I purchased clear plastic sleeves for the artwork to give to the customer. It protects the drawing from moisture, I am able to put a business card in each bag for future business, and it lays flat so others can see the drawing and will come and get their own. Now the bags are about 50-75 cents a piece but they have paid for themselves in business from a marketing standpoint and set me ahead of other artists that don’t offer the bags. A small but big investment. Recently I purchased new video equipment for our business. My older gear was about eight years old and it was getting tough to keep up with the demand of our business as we forge ahead in the video market. We invested and worked on securing a new client that will now pay for the equipment over time.

Investing in yourself is equally important. I get people all the time that call me for information or to “pick my brain” as they say. I don’t mind if they have done their homework first and just want another opinion. If they are calling because they don’t feel like doing work and want me to provide the answers then they haven’t done the work. Read about the topic, listen to podcasts, watch videos, go to seminars, invest in yourself. It doesn’t matter whether you are trying to improve your business, start a new service, or learn an instrument, you have to invest the time or money to learn what you need to know. Remember that saying,”Give a man a fish you feed him once, teach a man to fish and you feed him forever!”
We talk about investing in yourself on the Cashing in on Creativity Podcast in the month of August. We start off by talking about investing in your business on episode 141 and move into investing in yourself in episodes 142-145. If you enjoy music we talk to some young musicians about how they got started in music and round it out with a truck driver that is working on being an actor on how he finds time to audition for roles with a busy career on the road. You can find all these episodes at www.cashinginoncreativitypodcast.com
Don’t be afraid to invest in you, your career, or your business. Not only will it pay for itself over time but you will learn so much about the topic that you may not have thought of before. I know investing in our business has helped it be successful over the years and it will for you too. Good luck!

When you’re building a business as a creative entrepreneur it can be a struggle at times to get business. Even though I believe in having a business plan and planning out how your business will grow I also believe we miss some real opportunities that are right under our nose if we are too focused. Are people asking you for certain services even though they aren’t on your services list? Are you not looking at opportunities for your business because you don’t think it’s what you want for your business? This is common for many entrepreneurs myself included.
When I started my art business my focus was on creating editorial illustration
for magazines in the trucking industry. Although there were some opportunities for business the payment was limiting and photos were becoming the main media used. Once I launched my comic book series teaching cartooning became more prevalent and parents would ask me about doing caricatures for parties. The problem is I didn’t do caricatures and comics was the line I was focusing on. As the requests kept coming I began to look into the service of live caricature entertainment. Today one of the main services for our business is live caricature entertainment for weddings and corporate events.
The same thing happened recently in our business with video. I have been doing video for some clients, my television show, and my podcasts but never really thought of it as a specific service. If someone asked me we I would do it, but I never advertised it. The business has been built up through word of mouth and people seeing me online. We are now moving this into one of our core services for the company along with our social media services, writing services, and a host of other projects.
If you listen to the guests on the podcast you will see that similar pattern. Robert Stevens Jr created a sportswear line after his football career ended and is now a novelist gaining much of his experience from his travels as a truck driver across the Country.

Paul Houle is an award winning musician who has created a speaking business based on his talent and message he has created through his career on team building and communication.

Vanessa Greenblatt has a talent for telling if people are trying to pull the wool over someones eyes and created her business as a profile analyst to help corporate clients hire successful candidates. We talk with all of these guests on the Cashing in on Creativity Podcast this month so have a listen.

If you have been struggling with growing your business maybe you need to take a look at what people are asking for as you meet them. We all have the habit of only looking for the business that we added to our business plan but there are a multitude of bi-products and services that you may not be noticing that people are requesting. I have built a business up over a decade and when I look back the services I offer today many are not the services I started with. In fact most of the services I offered in the beginning I don’t even offer in our business today. Listen to the people you talk to and listen to their requests, it may be your next profitable service.

I have spoken to hundreds of people through my television show and podcasts and one fact always seems to come to light when interviewing new entrepreneurs. The fact is talent is not enough to create success in business. The successful creative entrepreneurs have figured out that business success comes from having the ambition to start, learn, and work on their own consistently working towards their goals. When talking with new creative entrepreneurs such as artists, authors, or musicians many focus on the craft they love but don’t have the ambition to work on the business.

You have probably heard someone say, “Wanting is not enough.” This is very true because even though inside you may want to have a successful business are you willing to put in the work to create that successful business. Many say, “Yes” very few follow through. The idea, the passion, and the talent won’t get you there unless you are ambitious in the business side and get your name out there. I remember an interview I did with violinist Grenville Pinto for the podcast where he shared that he had a marketing background and uses it everyday to keep the successful business that he has in place. Pinto’s business ranges from playing solo shows such as weddings and corporate events to mega shows with other stars from around the World. This talented musician said although he plays everyday he spends about 80% of his time marketing his business and connecting with other people to create opportunities for future business.
The definition of “Ambition” is a strong desire to do something. That strong desire is a good start because it will eat at you until you take the next step which is action. Think of it like a piece of code or a formula, talent+ambition+action=success. Once you have your talent the ambition is the next step in the formula. Telling you this is easy, doing it is another mindset all together.
When I was younger no one showed me people who had gone down the path of being a cartoonist which is what I wanted to do. They told me to stop dreaming and get a real job. This is why I am so passionate about showing people various career paths whether it be an artist like Ron Grieg who was a commercial artist and is now building a business as an oil painter or more like author Kelly Mack McCoy who was a former truck driver and now uses his knowledge from the road in his novels Rough Way to the Highway. Do you have an idea for a film or television show and aren’t sure how to get it to market? That is why we talked with actor Chris Hensel who played Jeb Duke on the Dukes of Hazzard about his new film Salvage Yard Shine Boys.
There are people where you can see a path to follow offering inspiration to get started. If you have developed your talent to the point that you feel it is at the professional level and you have the ambition to get it started then adding the action is the next step. Get started and keep going no matter what others say and you will find that success. Ambition is the first step to moving forward with your dreams.
